Changes Of American Society Involving Race Relations

Race relations in the United States have, for most of their history, been very rocky. Major changes came about, with the American Revolution and new technology like the cotton gin revolutionising the American economy. A large part of the American South’s economy though was built on slave labour, particularly going into the mid-19th century. Ideas of slavery and race changed over this period as new ideas and changes to society came about. In this essay, I will be discussing changes in American society involving race relations, focusing mainly on slavery and societies views of it, beginning in 1785 and ending in 1817. A letter from Thomas Jefferson to his friends in Europe in 1785, gives us an interesting view of how the upper, educated class in the late 18th century saw race relations. In it, he speaks mainly of native people, and how in mind and body they are equal to the white man (8.5). He states that black people are not equal to the white man in body or in mind though, but grudgingly admits that in a few generations, if properly ‘cultivated’, could become equal in both mind and body to the white man (8.5). This is an interesting view, because he believes that one day that African Americans could be equal instead of always being inferior. Next is a confession from a slave, whose brother attempted a rebellion which would take out the Governor of Virginia and free the other slaves who lived on plantations nearby.
